Stoke in Swimming fundraiser

Geoff Hughes at Stoke House raised a fantastic £176 by doing a sponsored swim.  Andy Whitehurst, Supervisor at Stoke, has this report for us:

Well, the time came round eventually - 3pm on Saturday 23 April.  Myself and Steve Bateman (packer/driver at Stoke), rocked up at our local fitness centre to support Geoff Hughes in his efforts.  Geoff was going to attempt to swim 100 lengths of the pool, equivalent to 1.5 miles.

Steve and I went to get a coffee while Geoff went to get into his swimming trunks.

Steve got his notepad and pen ready to keep track of the lengths.  Then the changing room door opened and Geoff stood there in his trunks, with his towel over his head - he was like something from Gladiators, tall, tanned and muscular. We were gobsmacked, until the changing room door opened again and the real Steve walked out.  His trunks looked like they had been painted on!

Geoff got in the pool, swimming 16 different styles at a time, so he could keep count of what he'd done.  There was a table tennis table next to where we were sitting, which looked very tempting, but we resisted and stuck to our job of watching Geoff.

One length after another that little pink swimming cap would keep bobbing out of the water and in exactly 1 hour Geoff had swum his 100 lengths and completed his goal. What a champ!  I don't know how he did it - Steve and I were tired just watching him.

It was an awesome achievement by Geoff and we are all very proud of him.  A big thank you to Geoff and to everyone who sponsored him.
